Can you see the way the rays of sun peer into windows?
They fill the void and chase the dust.
In my room it glistens off the old
ash tray that once belonged to my grandfather.
A large dish made of pulled glass with marble and glaze.
A splayed container with uneven sides.
When it was new, notches held his cigarettes.
The ashes cascaded into the bottom
with an eddy of bitter smoke,
and a suggestion of mint.
After he died, my grandmother kept it full of jelly candy.
Our tiny hands grubbed into the
pile to find the orange ones – his favorite-
Now it grabs the sunbeams
collected in the morning
and reflects about the room from the eddies and swirls.
And displays a fullness about sunlight
that might otherwise get misplaced.
Very poignant. Great job
